Baguley Road Labour Club (Wythenshawe)

What history!! My dad used to supply the Baguley Ward Labour Club with tombola/bingo and raffle prizes and booked artists (turns) there in the 1960s. Those were the days when the Labour Party had clubs all over the Manchester area including Wythenshawe Labour Club. I recall Timperley Ward Labour Club as well. This one was on Sunday lunchtimes - pubs and clubs were only open for a few hours on Sunday's during the day the resident band in this case - Eddie on the organ and Stan on the drums would play  a couple of spots - bit like Peter Kay's Phoenix Club! Just read the advert; "Concert Secretaries and Artists cordially invited". 'Auditions' - stories abound of concert secretaries turning down beat groups for being too loud or too scruffy, or saw groups with long hair as a passing fad. Singers, vent acts, magicians, instrumentalists, comics etc was what they really wanted! Other delights at some clubs included what were dubbed Gentlemen's smoking evenings - a comic and striptease artists and some had annual schoolboy boxing matches (in smoke filled concert rooms). You can't do that these days!!!
