The Carlton Club (Warrington)

The Carlton Club was at 13-17a Sakey Street, Warrington, Cheshire. It was above Jacksons and up some stairs. The Carlton club door was next to Woolworths and next door to the cafe.

The owner and manager was Chris Cullerton (b. Christopher Cullerton, 1938, County Wexford, Eire d. Friday, May 21, 2021, Warrington Hospital, Warrington, Cheshire, England). He ran it in the 1960's till the early 70's. He was born in County Wexford and moved to Warrington at 7 and worked as a butcher and as a porter at the Co-op.

He was also a promoter who brought The Rolling Stones to Warrington. Cullerton met The Rolling Stones when they played The Parr Hall, Palmyra Square South, Warrington on Monday, November 25, 1963, when Brian Jones tried to buy his waistcoat, but Cullerton turned him down. This was the day John F. Kennedy was shot.

Cullerton also became one of the town's first DJs, playing at The Hamlet, The Lion and The Carlton Club among others. He also brought Deep Purple to Warrington for one of their first live gigs, at The Red Lion, for which they were paid £45. In 1970 he married Cheryl.

Warrington band The Hornets / Jimmy Horne and the Hornets played here in the early 60's.

In January 2013 The Carlyon Club was made bankrupt.
