Essoldo Cinema (Stockport)

The Essoldo was at 98 Wellington Road South, Stockport, Cheshire.  The Essoldo was opened on Wednesday, July 28, 1937 by the Arderne Company Ltd and in July 1948 the cinema was taken over by the Essoldo Cinema chain.

  • Thursday, May 28, 1964: Peter and Gordon, The Rolling Stones, who performed 'Beautiful Delilah,' 'Not Fade Away' & 'I Wanna Be Your Man.'
  • Friday, October 30, 1964: Carl Perkins, The Animals  

 

In the Early 60's the place to go and see all the stars live, e.g. The Rolling Stones, The Animals and many more was the Essoldo Cinema, Stockport. My school Stockport Junior Commercial was just round the corner. 

Tickets for these shows went on sale at 09.00 on a Monday morning, so on those days we were always late for school as we were in the queue for front row tickets.

The Rolling Stones at the Essoldo May 28th, 1964. Two shows with hitmakers Peter & Gordon; Julie Grant a regular on TV; The Overlanders who later became the great Welsh rock band Man - they told me that anyway when I saw them playing Mirlees Social Club in Hazel Grove! And the ever popular Baron Knights comedy group who took the piss out of the Stones!

The second John Leyton Show flyer lists 'Edward Joffe' as the company manager. In 1968 Joffe was set to produce Tony Hancock's ill-fated Australian TV series and Hancock was living in a flat adjacent to the house Joffe was staying in. It was Joffe's wife that discovered Hancock's body.

Saw the great Gene Vincent there in the early sixties and also on the bill were The Brooks Brothers
Amazingly within two years I was on the same bill as them with Little John and His Foresters at The
Southern Sporting Club.Those were the days. :D

great to see this as l was an usherette there when the Rolling Stones were on was this about 1958/59 or just the beginning of the 60's.  I know it was before 1962 as my daughter was born then, and l also went to the Junior Commercial School in 1955 we were in the Baptist Church just off Greek St and went to Stockport College for Typing.  Think we also did some lessons at the church school next to Stockport baths.  Long time ago memory fading a bit lol.
