Ceylon Palais (Oldham Rd, Newton Heath)

Also known as Newton Heath Palais, in the late '50 I believe it was called the Celon Palais. They had Rock and Roll dances on a Sunday afternoon. The local group was called Tiddy and the Teenbeats, does anyone remember them? I remember seeing the Blue Notes or was it Blue Tones there in the early '60 before they became the Hollies.

Fri and Sat nights were dance nights. All the blokes dissapeared to the local pubs and only came back at closing time for the last dance having left the girls on their own in the dancehall all night. Par for the course in those days!

I lived in Newton Heath during my teenage years,and was mad keen on Rock and Roll.Saturday nights often found me in the Ceylon Palais with a few mates, trying out the latest steps.When 9 o clock came, we all grabbed a Pass Out andhurried round to theCopenhagen Tavern,although none of us was 18.I played  the piano,and as soon as I ""walked in the landlord said "Play us a few.will you, Derek."As I sat down at the keyboard, a pint appeared on top of the piano as if by magic!Half an hour and several pints later,Iwas still there.The landlord wanted to hang on to his customers and keep them out of theShears opposite!I had to do a disappearing act and get back to the Palais, or else I would have been there all night.Free beer and happy days.!!!
