Monaco (Farnworth)

The Club Monaco was in Church Street, Farnworth near Bolton, Lancashire.

It had been known as Moor Hall before that.

It was opposite the police station.

The club was owned by Ken Naylor (b. Kenneth Naylor, 1927 d. Friday, October 10, 2014) who also owned The Empire Cabaret Club, Dale Street, Milnrow, Lancashire; The Ritz Theatre Bar, Oldham, Lancashire; The Ritz Theatre, Brighouse, West Yorkshire and The Candlelight Club (formerly The Savoy Ballroom), Church Street, Oldham, Lancashire.

The venue was split into two floors by a huge sprawling staircase. Downstairs was a more traditional night club, while upstairs catered to a young audience of teddy boys and girls.

The Hollies played one of their early gigs here on Monday, March 25, 1963.  

It later became Blighty's.

I played at the Hindley Monaco in 1967 with Cleveland Fox (formerly ‘The Fur Trade Co. as we were then known). I had just joined the band and I remember not being up to speed with the set list, got through it alright though. It was great venue (still is actually), good dance floor and great audience, as I remember. They even had a small dance band who, I think were there to warm up the crowd. Didn’t seem to work, I remember the dance floor being completely empty whilst they were playing, but when the group came on the dance floor just filled up, even before we had started to play anything!
We were with the L.E agency, at the time, who had offices nearby, and I think the agency probably booked all the acts at the Monaco.

Just to clarify. The above pic (and my previous comments) relate to the Hindley Monaco near Wigan. The Farnworth Monaco, near Bolton was a completely different club.

I played in the resident band in 1966 playing 3 spots per night 4 nights a week and the dance floor was always  floor was always full when our group the Organisers was playing between visiting acts..I played a farfisa portable organ,with bass Stu,guitarist Mel and Mick drummer.lwas Dave.P.
