Godley's - Shudehill

OK, it wasn't a music shop but it does have good links to the Manchester scene. The most obvious is that it was owned by the family of Kevin Godley of Mockingbirds, Hotlegs, 10cc and Godley-Creme.

Its also important as many musos would have bought their record decks and hi-fi's from there. Not a great reason but the pic is just so good and brings back many memories.

I worked there about 1970, they had the photography shop, the camping shop, Manchester music centre and the telescope centre. I started as a Saturday boy in the camping shop, they had a building behind the main shop where all the tents were displayed. I left school and worked first in the music shop and then in the telescope centre. Mr Godley was very proud of Kevin and would give us a copy of the latest 10cc record when it was released. Mr Spears was the second partner and he gave me the job there. They were good to work for and I left when the area was being redeveloped. I think it is now under a carpark. Outside the shop was the Shudehill book market which was brilliant.

Hello David, just saying hello after all these years. Yes it was a great place to work and be educated in the art of retailing and selling. I was the manager of the photographic dept till it closed due to impending demolition due to building of the Arndale centre. Mike Kaye

IS there a bias at Manchesters Beat? I tried 3 times to add my discussion points to the two others yet all that came up was my name, I agreed with the others that Godleys was a great place to work, and gave some other innovations they used so successfully.

Hi, My name is Paul Oldbury. I worked at Higham's Harmony House as a Saturday boy then full time in 1969 to 1971. Don Rudge was the manager when I started and then Terry took over when Don emigrated to Australia in 1971. I also worked at Godley's in the camping department when they were short staffed. I also worked a bit in the Telescope Centre with Andrew Lovie. Sadly I believe he passed away in the late 70's or early 80's. I recall a guy called John, who had bright ginger hair, and a guy called Howard. There was also a guy called Colin who I worked with at Higham's. I'm back in touch with him because of comments on here.
