Seven Miles Out (Stockport)

A wonder fully 'trendy' shop with an eccentric owner. Selling clothes, furniture and quirky things.

Mike Meakin - 9/2/13

The absolute BEST shop in Stockport in the 60's ---- must have spent a fortune there.

Jo Egleton - 18/2/13

I loved shopping at "7 Miles Out"...got some great stuff for my flat in Heaton Mersey..and a FAB pair of Royal Stewart Red Tartan pants that I wore to pieces.. Long before those Bay City Roller guys.

BUT..the best thing about the quirky 7 Miles Out was....They had a Mountain Lion walking about the store..!!! yep True... ask anyone who knows.

I was happily wandering around the furniture dept one Sunday evening and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw this Mountain Lion walking about as if he owned the place..so I scooted out quickly with me Red pants and lived to tell this tail..!!

I believe it was on Wellington Road, Stockport, on the left, just before the Hat Museum and Mersey Square. It was run by a guy called Miles (who stocked our magazine 'Grass Eye'). Stockport is 7 miles from Manchester hence '7 Miles Out'.

Great place, Habitat was modelled  on Seven  miles out, authorities  forced Miles to close, they didn't  like his lovely panther being near his customers, he moved to a farm in Wales & lived there happily for several years until his cat went walkabout & killed some sheep, after which the local farmers shot it !!
I have a couple of  10x8 transparencies  that I took of the interior if anyone wants them.
Other places of note in Stopford (Stockport) at that time, was 'THE SINKING SHIP, a great night club (no alcohol ) where Jimmy Hendrix played for 5 minutes, before getting shut down for being too loud & lewd !! MY ears still hurt,  Strawberry  recording studios  were at the top of Underbank, top bands recorded there, just opposite the Tabernacle  night Club

Hey.  A friend just pointed me to this website.   What a blast from the past!  I actually worked at seven miles out for Miles Baddeley.   My hippy chick days .  I then worked at strawberry studios with the guys who went on to become 10cc.  They were called Hotlegs at the time, which my mini skirted legs inspired!  I now live in Sydney and had the opportunity to meet with Graham gouldman when 10cc were on tour recently.   We hadn't seen each other for 50 years!  We had a good old catch up!  Lovely guy.

Pam, were you Pam Gilbourne in those days? I had the garage Motorvation on New Zealand rd. and used to do 10ccs cars. Jane Hill was my girlfriend until she married Mick Gilbourne who played drums with the band Impact. if it were you we are both godparents to their firstborn. Hope life has treated you well. Studios not at the top of Underbank, but on left hand side of Waterloo Rd, just off Hillgate. Further down Waterloo Rd was Hopes Carr, where tragically the aeroplane came down. Built over now. I always thought there should have been a memorial established there to commemorate the pilot & the others that lost who lost their lives & also include a tribute to the heroic emergency crews who battled to save those trapped in the fuselage.

Have you ever been in contact with John Barratt or Rosemary Barratt in Stockport - they I’m sure would be interested in any photos or stories / information about 7 Miles Out as the ran a Creative Venue in the Market Place with the same name from 2013 - 2018n- they also run Foody Friday a very successful monthly event.

Is that the same John Barratt who used to manage the band Syncopation?

Miles was a friend of mine, his pet cat was a Puma, called Khan!
Khan was not only at the shop but lived with Miles in a flat on Heaton Moor Rd.
miles would walk his PussyCat late at night when it was quiet… once he brought him to my house….OMG!!!
