Halon (Stockport and Oxford St, Manchester)

Anyone remember "HALON" in Stockport ? It was not as fashionable as the Toggery, but not bad either. They sponsored a group called "The Halons".

You could also buy "Allan Allen" button down collar shirts from there, which were made in Stockport by Alan Cheetham, who was an agent, and managed a few groups as well.

There was also a Halons opposite the Wimpey/A1 on Oxford Rd.

Almost sure there was a branch on Deansgate between Royce Menswear (where I pretended to work) and the entrance to Barton Arcade approximately opposite the cinema.

Remember it well - bought my black knitted Beatles slim tie there & still have it ! Next door was the Touchstone Pub plus a Fishmongers run by Pete (The Fish) Staples, who was drummer with Gordon Robinson Septet - regulars at the Bamboo Club, Hazel Grove

I worked there for about 6 months in 1965. It was a good place to work.

I worked in the Head Office of Halon's in Oxford Road in the early 60s till 1964.  They also had a shop there (and yes, there was a Wimpy Bar opposite).  At the time, they had about 26 shops all over the country.  I also worked in the Cannon Street shop on Saturday's.  A great bunch of people and I really enjoyed working there.  Happy days.

Glad to see "Halon" still fondly remembered by some! The business still survives in Shrewsbury.  I spent my holidays as a teenager in the 60s helping out in the Warehouse and occasionally in some of the shops.  I was thinking of doing a photographic tour around the country to take  photos of what was now standing where the shops used to be.  I am not sure what my father and uncles would have made of the Brazilian Waxing Company that has taken over part of the Oxford Road frontage...

I played in the Halon band a couple of times before moving on. I remember the audition was in a small room above the shop, the Toggery 5 were the main local band at the time and the Toggery was the rival fashion shop along with Seven Miles Out. They were amazing times all just a dim memory now.

I worked in the Oxford Road stockroom in the mid 1970s where all the company's new stock was delivered. I then worked in one of the two Deansgate stores. I do remember Terry & Alma Regan. I used to see Terry on the train. The manager of the store I worked in was Desmond Ward. Other staff names won't come to me, sadly.
