Jeff Young (Manchester)
Jeff Young (b. Geoffrey Kenneth Mullin, Friday, September 11, 1942, Nell Lane Hospital, Nell Lane, Withington, south Manchester 20, Lancashire, England d. Friday, September 30, 2022 at home in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England of cancer) was a singer, band member, band manager, road manager and D.J. from Withington.
Mullin (Young) spent a couple of years in Norway in the mid 60s, singing under the stage name of Jeff Young, performing occasionally with The Vanguards, The Actions and other Norwegian groups.
Mullin had been educated at Moseley Road Infants School, Moseley Road, Fallowfield, Manchester 14 then Birchfields Primary School, 62 Lytham Road, Fallowfield, Manchester 14 and then Burnage Grammar School, Burnage Lane, Burnage, Manchester 19.
Mullin had managed The Demons, Danny and the Demons, Dean West and the Hellions and The Hellions and had been lead vocalist in The Wailers (Oct 1963 - April 1964), who he also managed, that meant he got two wages. He was also lead vocalist in Manchester group The 6 Mint Julips (from April 1964), The Zodiacs (Summer - Autumn 1964) and The Gaylords (The Gaydogs) (ca. Oct 1964 - 1965), who released a single as The Yaks on Friday, March 26, 1965 The Yaks 'Yakety Yak' (Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller) and 'Back In 1957' (Warren) on Decca F 12115.
From August 1966 Mullin became the road manager for The Four Pennies (formed in Nov 1963 at Reidy's Home Of Music at 11-13 Penny Street, Blackburn). He did the band a favour as stand in roadie for a year until the band split in Late 1967. The band played their final gig in Late 1967 in Turkey.
Mullin in the UK also released a solo single as Jason James 'Miss Pilkington's Maid' (Geoff Mullin, Frank Weston) and 'Count Me Out ' (Geoff Mullin, Frank Weston, Chris Hutchins) on Friday, April 21, 1967 on CBS 2705.
Mullins also wrote/co-wrote songs for other artists such as Mary McCarthy, Kippington Lodge and Herman's Hermits —under his real name Mullin or under the pseudonym Roger Brook.
