I was just a kid when the Penquins were going....I used to hang around Stu Jayne's playing drums in his front room when nicking off school with Stu on the upright piano....Strangely enough, I bought Stu's old black pearl Premier drum kit, and nearly 10 years later bought his house at 476 Manchester road Heaton Chapel when he moved to Freckleton near Blackpool !!!......His Dad was in the business as a straight man to a famous comic called Dave Morris.....I think his name was Cyril......I remember on of the Penguins guitarists having a bright yellow /gold glitter guitar (I think it was an Eko)... and smothering the neck and strings with some oil or other......Why I remember this I don't know !!!.......Happy Days, ....Rob Parkes.

I was a member of this group in 1963/4. The group was based in Heaton Chapel, Stockport. Roy Smith was from Ashton and he played bass guitar. I was from Reddish, Stockport and I played rhythm guitar. John Kelly played lead guitar and owned a cherry red Gibson, which was a big deal for a young teenager those days! John now lives with his wife and family in Brisbane, Australia. The group's leader was Stewart Jayne. He played drums and keyboard and was the lead singer. Being multi-talented, he could act too, and later went on to be "Bunny" (Diana Dors' son) in the comedy sitcom "Queenie's Castle". His acting name was Bryan Marshall, I think.
