Bobby and the Blue Diamonds were a Stockport group, formed in about 1962.

As with most local groups, we formed to play youth clubs and functions but mostly to meet girls. Of course we became quite proficient and then branched out to play in Manchester, at the usual clubs: Bodega, Jungfrou, Oasis, Twisted Wheel, etc.

In Stockport we played at the Manor Lounge, doubled with the Kingfisher, owned by Reg Pickstock. Happy days.

We decided to get an agent and came under the management of Derek Oultram Entertainments, in association with The George Cooper Organisation (London) who represented big artists at that time, includig Joe Brown, Johnny Kidd, Marty Wild, Jess Conrad and even Bert Wheedon, and way down the list, us. We were in high company at this time.

In 1963/4 we decided to turn pro. Two members of the group didn't take the plunge and so we started to audition for a drummer and bass player. The very talented drummer we chose was Ronnie Pirelie/Clary. He was with Deek Rivers and the Big Sound. Deek was sadly killed in an accident.

We needed a bass player to complete the new lineup. At the auditions was a young lad who came with his parents. He looked about 14 but turned out to be 17. He had a Hofner Verethin bass.

We had already decided on a player when this lad got up and asked if hec ould audition. We were suprised that he was old enough and when he played he was the most superb bass player I had listened to. It turned out that he was the lead violin with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Hiss name was Ronald Burke and he went on to become one of world famous Lindsay String Quartet - but for now he became our bass player. He is a great lad and even now talks fondly of his days in pop. Who says pop and classical dont mix! It did and still does. In fact he is still an avid fan of Jimi Hendrix.

We went on to spend time in Germany where we worked hard and played hard. A great time was had by all.

Returning to the Uk we gigged all over the place and then did some recording with Joe Meek, in Holloway Road above a leather shop. Joe Meek was to have an amazing career and had lots of number ones, with artists like Heinz, The Applejacks and many more. Sadly he shot hmself - that's rock and roll, I suppose.

We didn't carry on too long after this and went on to persue our own course in life and follow our own dreams.

Often wondered and so glad to hear how well your future turned out my late husband Ron was the drummer with the blue diamonds and I remember you Maxine I have lots of photos of you and the band happy days

Hi Yvonne I met you a few years ago at Pete Mcclaine son Simon pub in Heaton Moor Stockport. We were watching Mandy Montgomery and Billy Rance in their band Mandy and The big heads. And possibly Spider Mike King. I reminded you that when I was a teenager and then adult I used to come to yours and your late husband Ron vinyl stall at Manchester underground market. Hunting for anything on Rod Stewart and The Faces lol. I've seen and met Mandy a few times, she told me about the tragic accident that took the life of her dad Deke Rivers. I think Bobby Harrison and Pauline Howard was Renshaw was in the night I met you. I can still remember your face and your voice from those days visiting when I visited your stall. Good to hear your still with us. I often have memories pop in my head on FB of you and Ron when I see old photos of the market or I hear Rod Stewart and The Faces on Radio or TV. Infact on Sunday I was listening to Johnny Walker sounds of the 70s and someone from NZ requested The Faces' you can make sing dance or anything' from 1974, and I remembered buying that around 1980 off you it was on the Warner Bros label and it transported me back 42 years. Btw I'm good friends with Patricia Young and 15th July 2020 the 20th Anniversary of @Wythenshawe's Paul Young singer Songwriter passing I have 760 members on the FB page covering Paul's career 1964 - 2000 and beyond. Many 60s 70s artist he cross music adventures with. Hope to hear from you soon add me on FB so many musicians from Manchesterbeat.com are on my FB page dedicated to Paul Young. X

My older brother, Brian ( ten years older ) was road manager for the Blue Diamonds. They bought a huge american Dodge Coronet which was parked on our drive before they bought the van and had it lined out. Neighbours opposite came over and said we were lowering the tone of the road. Some Sundays they practiced in our back room when my parents had gone out. Brian drove on a tour of Germany with them, when the female vocalist ,Bobby, became homesick and left. Brian had a bash at singing but he was tone deaf ! Much later I used to wear the blue sparkle jacket and pretend to be Billy Fury
