Black Velvets

Colin Thomas - Lead Vocals & rhythm guitar
Harry Donnelly - Lead Guitar
Gary Hayward - Drums
Ian Thompson - Bass guitar

The band was originally formed in the mid sixties as the IMPALAS, then became the BLACK VELVETS, a four piece Rock & Roll / Country style outfit who were one of the warm up acts for Top of the Pops when the programme was filmed at the old BBC studios on Dickenson Road in Manchester.

In the late sixties, they were joined by Harry’s brother, Jack Donnelly on lead vocals, Colin moved to keyboards, Ronnie Williams (the Impalas original drummer) replaced Gary, and the name was changed to LIQUORICE FIX.

Has anyone got any contact details for Ian or Colin. My dad (Ron Williams) was in a band with them both. Thanks. Emma.

Garry still  plays a set starting with a few of the songs the Black Velvets used to do.   Little Latin Lupe Lou, Teardrops fall like rain, Don't try to change me, Talk about my Baby and Loves made a fool of you.  They may sound a little different now but the influences of Harry and Colin are still there. A bit of Crickets influence as well Haha. The memories of those great days never fade.

Drummer Garry Hayward is still playing, although for many years now he has played guitar. He still loves music of all genres and still keeps a drum kit in his studio. The Strat at the back of the picture of me in the Gallery  9black t-shirt) is a prized possession and used to belong to Harry ( Adge) Donelly.
