AXIS (Stockport)

Axis were a Stockport based four-piece band, whose set included blues, old Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix, John Mayall, Chicken Shack and later heavier material from Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Free, plus original material.

Line-up included

  • Chris Statham - rhythm guitar and lead vocals (replacing Nick Fairbrother in 1968), went on to do a lot of songwriting and recording 1978 - 1987. http://www.pastandpresentduo.co.uk/studio.htm - Currently doing gigs as a duo with Louise www.pastandpresentduo.co.uk
  • Chris Daniel - bass - went on to join a band called 'The Out' 1978 - 1981. The rhythm player was George Borowski, who became famous as Guitar George when they supported Dire Straits on a gig. Chris Daniel still lives in Bredbury.
  • Glen Cartledge - lead guitar

  • Paul Burgess - drums - left July 1971 went on to join '10cc' in 1973, mainly for touring until Godley & Creme left, then he was on all their recordings too. He's currently touring in Germany & Holland with Graham Gouldman as 10cc. They tour the UK from the end of April (Manchester Opera House 5th May). Paul still lives in Stockport, and does the pub circuit when he's home.

  • John Bohen - lead guitar - replaced Glen Cartledge in September '69

  • Tony Cresswell - drums - joined July 1971 (joined Sad Cafe about 1976)
