Dave Cave

This is me as a dj in the 70's and now, in my Toy showroom in Hong Kong.

I spent my best years in Manchester in the late 60's and 70's ,I was a dj on Piccadilly Radio for some time.

Just went through all your comments re Mr Smiths.  I was a croupier at the Portland Club when I first got to Manchester and then got a job as the DJ at Time and Place. Now that was a discotheque well before its time.

Fond memories though of Mr Smiths, found a 10 bob chip once on the floor and ended up making 20 pounds on roulette in 1970  - I was a rich man.

Great to hear all your comments.  Anyone there from Time and Place days or Nice and Easy?

Hi Dave
You most likely won’t remember me but I don’t know why but your name just popped into my head and low and behold I googled you and there you are. I used to work at Ralph’s Records late 60’s early 70’s and remember you coming in to the shop to listen to new releases You were very suarve and sophisticated compared to some of the other patrons of the establishment. I have a memory of you going to Sweden- not sure if it was for business or pleasure.
I can remember when you started at Piccadilly Radio. Great memories of a great DJ and a really special Record Shop.
Cheers  Dorine

Hi' Dave, doing this just after our gracious Queen Elizabeths funeral, very very proud to be be British. My name is Vinny and for well over 25years I was a D.J. in various M/C City centre clubs. First one was the original Portland Lodge Dickenson St just off Portland St. £4•00 a night "wow"..! ! T was a neat little venue owned by the William's brothers and a regular haunt of The Quality Street Gang. The Mancinis, Schiavos etc. I got to know them very well & even though some times they were less than honest they weren't like these villains we have in todays world.. Used to get CBS 'promo' records from a guy called 'Penn' whose small CBS office was in Portland St near the G.P.O. sorting office, great guy.. My normal supply of vinyl was of course Gary Lsbes "Spin-Inn" on Cross St mearThe Shambles Pub, American Imports £1•00 'yep'.. Can't remember how we met but I got to know Phil Wood Piccadilly 261 and went around with him for years, great guy, we went to various clubs incl' "Slack Alice" Bootle St. Think truthfully you took me in there first how it happened I dunno'..? After work at the Portland Lodge it was either "Greasy Nick's Cafe" Oxford Rd, round the corner, a big meeting place for club employees D.J.'s, bouncers etc etc. Also there was "Ray's Bangla" facing Central Library the first Indian restaurant I think in M/C. No 'Chinatown' as it is now in those days just "Charlie Chans'' George St just off Princess St where Blinkers was (Selwyn Demmy etc). Later used to go in Oscars early doors then 'The Millionaire' where I did quite a but of work later working for the late Pete Stringfellow bless him. Worked at other venues 'Brambles", 'Rotters' but my memory of knowing you was you & I opened up and promoted 'Phillip's Park Hall', Park Lane Prestwich. Memory it was Ken Learys place did at least a couple of years there, great and a very popular venue, buzzin' as they say. As you may know it became a wedding venue and died on its 'a**e' eventually, shame.. Even though I am way past the '65' mark I am still doin' D.J. and promo' work, keeps my brain active and I still enjoy seeing people enjoying themselves.. No idea if we will ever meet up again as your on the other side of the world in a different line of work but you never know as they say.. If you get this and ever find time I will give you my home and mobile numbers, contact from you would be great. Thankfully I am still very well respected in the music game, people regularly come up and say "it's Vinny my Gid are you still doing this"..? My reply is always the same, "Yeh' stop enjoying it, stop doing it"..!! Anywsy Mr "C" it's my birthday tomorrow September 22nd and doing this has cheered me up. Wherever you are, whatever your doing, "Stay Safe" my mate.
